Dr. Lena Winestone’s study shows that universal newborn screening for severe combined immunodeficiency (SCID) eliminated a longstanding survival gap between Black and non-Hispanic White children. The work also highlights UCSF’s Dr. Jennifer Puck, whose pioneering research helped advance SCID screening from an initial Navajo Nation pilot to a national policy.
